How to Make a Short Film For (Almost) Nothing

Seminar

For aspiring filmmakers, experience is key. In the past, entering the filmmaking world required a significant investment of money and time (almost always both). But DV cameras and low-cost computer editing systems have opened the door for almost anyone to enter the filmmaking game. And breakthroughs in HD video, DVDs and the Internet have virtually eliminated the barriers for anyone to make their own film and get it in front of an audience. This seminar will provide attendees with real-world information about how to make a film, from concept to completion, with very low cost.

Topics to be covered include: writing for no-budget (skip the space battles), adding production value on the cheap, what camera to use (pros and cons of DV, HDV, HD, film), finding actors (Rule 1: Don't star in your own film ... sure, I know you're perfect for the role, don't do it!), putting together a crew, production pitfalls and how to avoid them, cooking lessons (a.k.a. keeping your crew happy), editing (your film is too long ... I know you haven't made it yet, but it's already too long), promoting/screening your film (making the film is half the work), the intangibles (music rights, legal issues, insurance)

Several of Littleflick Pictures' short films will be screened to illustrate examples.

Jerry MacKay is the co-founder of Littleflick Pictures, an independent film company currently producing a collection of short comedy films ("Release The Funny" premieres this summer). He is also the Director of Digital Video Production for Full Circle Studios, and a Canisius College alum (class of '96).

Incorporating Graphics and Animation to Enhance Your Video

Workshop

Jason Holler of Holler Media Productions is teaming up with Andrew Boeing of Full Circle Studios for this workshop. They will discuss how to incorporate graphics into video and why it is important to enhancing a production. Using Photoshop, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro attendees will create a 30 second final product that integrates graphics and animation with video.

Jason Holler graduated from the Digital Media Arts program at Canisius, and has worked as a professional in the video industry for over four years. In January of this year, Jason formed Holler Media Productions, a full service video production company in order to create a wide variety of professional projects.

Andrew Boeing is a graduate of the Digital Media Arts and Communcation Studies programs at Canisius College. Now a Digital Media Producer at Full Circle Studios, one of the leading media production companies in Buffalo, Andrew deals directly in the post-production work of video editing, and graphic design.

Fontlab 101

Workshop

A brief yet intensive introduction to font design using the FontLab Studio 5 font editing program. This is an introduction but some experience in Bezier curve drawing in Illustrator or Freehand is recommended.

Richard Kegler is founder and art director of P22 type foundry, a Buffalo based digital type design company. He is also the founder of the Western NY Book Arts Collaborative. He likes type and books.

Workshops/Lectures/Screenings (continued)

The Animated Century

Screening

The Animated Century is the first ever comprehensive presentation of the history of animation worldwide. Animated hosts Professor Edward Arlington Elderberry and his disciple Horace, created by America's most prolific and successful independent animator, Bill Plympton, introduce animated clips from 160 films created in 26 different countries. They also demonstrate different animation techniques, including pin screen, pixilation, rotoscope, cutout, and puppet animation.

Presented by Erik Daye.

Final Cut Pro: Working with Multiple Layers of Video

Workshop

A benefit of Final Cut Pro has been the ability to nest multi-layer composites within the master sequence / edit timeline. Aesthetically, there are many approaches to multi-layered video, from experimental film's usage of "spatial montage" to the glitzy motion graphics of television commercials. In this seminar we will examine the technical

steps and aesthetic approaches to a video with simultaneous playback of 6 layers of video.

Jamie O'Neil is Assistant Professor of Digital Media Arts at Canisius College. He is a video/multimedia designer and performance artist whose work has been exhibited internationally and as part of the Beyond/In Western NY Art Show. His research interests include postmodern design, relational aesthetics and remix culture and he has

published on all these topics. Before joining Canisius he worked for ten years as a designer and partner at firms in Boston and Manhattan, producing work for Corning, Mead Papers, Titleist, Bank of America, The National Children's Museum, Birdair, Hodgson-Russ, Wilson-

Greatbatch and served as a series editor (of video) for PBS affiliates.

Lighting: Don't shoot until you see the LIGHT in their eyes

Workshop

This introductory tutorial applies to location and studio lighting, and seeks to be an alternative to the standard teaching of the art of three-point lighting. In this seminar, participants will examine multiple approaches to lighting a simple one-camera interview and learn the basic techniques that have defined the "professional-look" in video production.

Audio: What is a remix and how do I make one?

Workshop

Remixing is an aesthetic practice that has serious consequences for all aspects of digital media arts, from the design-template mindset, to the millions of media appropriations that flood the web. This workshop will go back to the basics of making an audio remix from a pre-existing pop song by utilizing the auto-tempo analysis feature of Ableton Live software. No previous audio experience is necessary to participate, although participants should be aware of the extremely addictive effects of learning how to remix.
